Glenn Maxwell New Captain of Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2017
Question in detailAustralian all-rounder Glen Maxwell will be seen with added responsibilities in IPL 2017, starting from April 5. After being named as new captain of Kings XI Punjab in IPL 10, Glenn Maxwell takes over the role of Murali Vijay, who replaced David Miler as captain midway last season.
The selectors announced Glenn Maxwell as KXIP captain om IPL 10 dropping the latter Murali Vijay. KXIP has been quite experimental with their captains since David Miller lost five out six games in IPL 2016. To score off the captaincy woes, the management had given the role to Murali Vijay last year. But, the move didn't reap the expected reward. Following Miller and Vijay's nagging failures, KXIP seeks a captaincy change again. And this time, the team bets on a rather unexpected name, Glenn Maxwell who has never captained a side in his career.
Despite having an underwhelming last two seasons, Maxwell becomes the first choice as new captain of Kings XI Punjab. The Australian all-rounder has managed to score 324 runs in 22 matches with just two fifties to his name. In IPL 2014, which he finished racking up 552 runs at a strike rate of 187.75, earned him lot of fame and limelight. Also, his explosive performances led Kings XI Punjab to their maiden final that year.
Glenn Maxwell as KXIP captain comes all the more surprising, apparently because the team has some better choices instead with England's limited-over skipper Eoin Morgan being the first one. Darren Sammy, who captained West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles, could also have been given the role. But, this is up to whom the selectors have more faith in.
